Water Moves is a collaborative work with Jake Eshelman that flowed from a two month pilgrimage throughout Wales to explore the deep ecology of Welsh sacred springs.
During our pilgrimage, we drank holy water, collected holy water, and carried holy water with us from place to place. We became curious about the boundaries and permeability of sacred springs. As their waters flow outward from their source, when do they cease to be sacred? Or do they carry the sacred with them wherever they go?
Water moves. It flows ceaselessly into itself, defying odds and boundaries as it seeps into everything. In one sense, this Welsh holy water is a visitor to our home in Houston, but in another sense it has been here before as all water on Earth cyclically moves and changes states: evaporating, condensing, and raining down again somewhere new.
This sculpture (re)introduces water sourced from Welsh sacred springs to water sourced from Houston’s bayou system, which flows just ~200ft from this sculpture. As these waters saturate the silk rope connecting them, they intertwine, imbuing one another with story, sacrality, and a sense of place.
